Avenida Brasil

It’s been a dreary winter here in the Pays Basque. Rain, rain, and more rain… Psssssst. I’ll let you in on a little secret. There’s a place in Biarritz where you can find an abundance of warmth and sunshine — Avenida Brasil!

Stepping into Avenida Brasil is like stumbling upon a psychedelic jungle cafe that is equal parts vibrant and lively! The splashes of colour everywhere and the soothing Portuguese tunes have a lot to do with creating the vivid ambiance, but mostly it’s thanks to the extremely warm and welcoming owners, Tai and Dan.


This lovely couple hails from Brazil; they both lived in Italy for a number of years and some of that Italian know-how is reflected in their meals! Tai is the petite chef that radiates nothing but warmth and ceaseless smiles, and Dan is the friendly sommelier that will shake up a special Sabores Caipirinhas for you. 😜


Flashback to the beginning of last month when I decided to check out Avenida Brasil for the first time as it had only opened its doors this past summer. And boy was I in for a treat!


To start off, my friend and I ordered their Caipirinha Sabores, which was a concoction of passion fruit, strawberry, cachaça, and their special condiment, rose pepper berries! I’ve never had a drink with rose pepper berries and this was DELISH. There was a peppery bite to it, but with a nice, fruity after taste. We enjoyed them so much, we ordered seconds!

To start, I ordered the Guacamole à la brésilienne that was topped off with ground cashew nuts on a Brazilian tapioca crepe. This was my first time having a tapioca crepe and it was unique, to say the least. The crepe is grainy in texture, the starch comes from the cassava plant and they’re made in-house. I can’t say I was a huge fan, though I didn’t dislike it either.

My friend ordered the Tapioca Carioca crepe that had chicken, tomato sauce, onions and cheese in it. She wasn’t a fan of the tapioca crepe, but I did enjoy the chicken filling!

We both swooned at the description for their Friday special which was a cod fillet cooked in coconut milk on a bed of rice and roasted vegetables with a small side of salad, so that’s what we got! It tasted like a nourishing home cooked meal from a friend. I guess that’s what happens when the chef has a degree in nutrition. 😋 The rice was so deliciously fragrant from the coconut milk and the fish was perfectly cooked and moist, not overly salted. Love, love, love!

By no means am I a flan person. I don’t have anything against it, it’s just that I’ve yet to eat a good one. Until now that is! When Tai gave us a rundown of the desserts they offered, the both of us just knew we had to try the flan. It was definitely the star of our meal. Let’s move from bottom to top: on the bottom, we have their homemade caramel syrup which was divine (not cloyingly sweet, just right), the flan, coconut shavings, guava puree, and then topped with grated Parmesan Reggiano cheese. Say w-h-a-t? Yes, Parmesan Reggiano cheese.

Having lived in Italy for a number of years, Tai picked up a thing or two from the Italians and what a surprise to the taste buds it was… The flan was really good, the guava puree was subtle, and the Parmesan Reggiano was the cherry on top of the cake! Just wow. Somehow its savoury, sharp flavour tied everything together divinely. Get it, you won’t be disappointed!

My friend and I spent a good couple of minutes chatting with Tai and Dan as we were paying for our bill. Before we left, Tai casually mentioned for me to head to the toilet, she said, “I think you’ll want to see it.” And so I did.

Oh my, my. Covered all over the walls to the ceiling were butterflies for days. Decorative ones, of course! There was a sign in there that tooted, ‘Good Vibes’ and truly, you can feel the good vibes in every nook of Avenida Brasil. ✨


As we headed out, it felt like we were saying goodbye to good friends after a home cooked meal. Thank you for the epic warm welcome, Tai and Dan! Sending the both of you butterfly kisses. 🌈🌟

P.S. Avenida Brasil will be opening their second branch in Anglet by the Chambre d’Amour beaches soon with a bigger space and terrace. It will be the perfect place to lounge while kicking back 2,3, heck 4 Sabores Caipirinhas!
